Saira Draper speaking at the Georgia State Capitol

The Issues

Where Saira stands — and what she's working to change.

Voting & Democracy

Saira is on the front lines of the fight for democracy in 2026. In this legislative session, she's confronted the runaway State Election Board, spoken out against the FBI raid of the Fulton County Election office, and defeated every piece of bad election legislation offered in the General Assembly by Republicans. And she has led efforts to increase accessibility to the polls for families with young children. For Saira, fair elections underpin every other issue that matters to Georgians.

As a former Director of Voter Protection and the lone Democrat appointed to the Georgia House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Election Procedures, Saira brings unmatched expertise to the Capitol. She has consistently worked across the aisle to protect the ballot box while pushing back against restrictive policies.

Protecting Families

Sponsored HB 502, which passed as part of HB 559, to ensure parents voting with young children receive fair and priority access when voting.

Stopping Voter Harassment and Ensuring Fair Districts

Championed HR 1200 to protect private voter data and HR 1033 to limit mid-decade redistricting and prevent partisan gerrymandering.

Leading Reform

Pushed for reforms of the State Election Board and fought to maintain automatic voter registration and absentee voting access.

Affordability

Saira fights to expand housing stability and improve affordability. She supports practical solutions to increase attainable housing, and strengthen homeowner protections. She voted to roll back high gas prices in the wake of the Iran war.

Saira believes every Georgian deserves access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. Her work focuses on empowering local communities with the tools they need to manage rising costs and protect the investments of families.

Supply & Flexibility

Supported the Housing Affordability package to modernize zoning tools, increase the supply of attainable housing, and give local governments the flexibility to address the cost of living.

HOA Reform

Sponsored the bipartisan HB 1221, requiring greater financial transparency and accountability from homeowners associations to protect homeowners from predatory practices.

Supporting Workers

Senate District 44 is home to the CDC and the Decatur VA. Saira knows these institutions only work because of the people behind them. She's a fierce advocate for every worker's right to fair compensation, a seat at the table, and a workplace free from political retaliation.

Community Support

Supported state-level resources to assist federal workers during shutdowns, emphasizing that these professionals are essential to the functioning of our democracy.

Data Centers & Energy

Ratepayer Protection

Voted to ensure large energy users, like data centers, pay their fair share for infrastructure so that costs are not passed on to everyday Georgians.

Accountability

Worked to ensure the Public Service Commission (PSC) is managed sensibly and transparently, advocating for leaders committed to clean-energy adoption and grid reliability.

Civil Rights

As the daughter of immigrants and a former Southern Poverty Law Center attorney, Saira is a consistent advocate for immigrant families and other vulnerable groups—emphasizing dignity, due process, and access to essential services.

Saira’s legal career has been dedicated to defending fundamental rights. She believes Georgia is stronger when we celebrate our diversity and treat every resident with respect and humanity.

Opposing Overreach

Consistently opposes legislation that forces local law enforcement to act as federal immigration agents, protecting the trust between communities and local police.

Community Recognition

Supported HR 175 (Latino Day) and HR 1325 (New Americans Day) to honor the vital contributions of Georgia’s immigrant communities.

Environment & Stewardship

Saira believes that when Georgia's natural assets are at risk, leaders must use every available tool—legislative or otherwise—to protect them for future generations.

From the South River Forest to the Okefenokee Swamp, Saira is a strong voice for environmental stewardship. She demands transparency and community engagement in development decisions to protect public health and our state’s biodiversity.

The South River Forest

Championed the protection of metro Atlanta’s green spaces, raising alarms about the cumulative impacts of industrial development on tree canopy and water quality.

Okefenokee Protection

Supported bipartisan legislation to safeguard the Okefenokee Swamp from mining. When legislative paths stalled, she partnered with conservation groups and federal agencies to find alternative long-term protections for this global ecosystem.

A Voting Rights Lawyer
Ready to Lead

The daughter of immigrants, Saira was raised in Georgia, attended public schools, and earned her degree from Georgia Tech and her law degree from Georgetown. As a civil rights attorney at the SPLC, she represented a national class of immigrant children separated from their families.

In 2020, she led voting rights efforts for the Biden, Warnock, and Ossoff campaigns, directing more than 12,000 volunteers to ensure fair and free elections across Georgia. Saira continued that fight in the State House, working to tear down barriers to the ballot box and ensure every Georgian's voice was heard and protected.

I have spent my career as a lawyer fighting to secure people's fundamental rights. This is the work I am passionate about—ensuring every person gets a fair shake, equality before the law, and a vigorous defense of our civil and human rights.
